Training Down Under: A Kiwi Welcome
Venturing to the far reaches of New Zealand for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup was an adventure. They provided us with an amazing training environment and a place to stay that made us feel right at home. And let me tell you, the training center had everything we needed including awesome fans cheering us on!
A Tough Beginning
Our first match against Italy didn’t go exactly as planned. We gave it our all and at times, we totally dominated the game. But then, in the 87th minute, we got scored on, and it felt like a punch to the gut. Despite the tough result, I couldn’t be prouder of how we played and the heart we showed out on the field.
A Rollercoaster of Resilience
The second game was another rollercoaster of emotions. We started off struggling and found ourselves down 2-0 in the second half. It was frustrating, especially because we were coming off a strong performance and really wanted that first World Cup win. The pressure was on too, as losing this game would mean an early exit from the tournament. Then, something amazing happened—with just 15 minutes left, we managed to score two goals and tie the game. Though we didn’t clinch the win, the momentum we gained was electric, and salvaging a draw in such a crucial match was a huge boost.
A Goal to Remember: Dreams Turned Reality
Now, let me tell you about a moment that’s etched in my memory forever: scoring our team’s first goal in the tournament. Just playing in the World Cup was an absolute dream come true so scoring a goal was beyond anything I ever imagined. That goal changed the game for us, bringing us much-needed momentum in a match where finding the net was proving tough. More than anything, I’m humbled and honored to have contributed to the team’s performance in such a crucial match. The love and support I received after that goal was incredible and I am so grateful for everyone that reached out.
Intensity and Expectations: The World Cup Stage
The intensity of the games was like nothing I’d experienced before. Every team in the tournament was incredibly skilled, leaving no room for easy matches. I think more than anything what sets this competition apart is the pressure and expectations that come with it. With a World Cup occurring only every four years, the margin for error becomes razor-thin. And then there’s the awareness that you’re representing your country on a global stage, where eyes from all corners of the world are fixed on you. The goal is simple—give your absolute best and make your nation proud. All that pressure definitely adds up but for me I have to try to keep myself centered and present in the moment. I like to remind myself it’s the same game I have played since I was six, no matter how many people are watching or who I am playing for I just want to enjoy the game, and I know the rest will take care of itself.
Stay tuned for the concluding chapter of Sophia’s travelogue, where she shares her exciting adventures and heartfelt reflections from her first World Cup experience.
